★★½☆☆ = Liked parts; parts only okay but would read more by author.

 Short version:

Love triangle, dye-away heroine that had promise in the sample but became too stupid to live (so clueless in spite of all the sledgehammer clues author beat her over the head with you stopped caring what happened). The extra nail in the coffin with the love triangle was that

if only she had not believed some high school mean girl decade ago they would still have stayed together

(show spoiler)

with first love who conveniently as an adult is competing with her for FBI intern spot in a town so small high school shit still going on and everyone knows your business yet somehow is the chosen site for a big new FBI department.

Longer version: Of course, all law enforcement and security personnel completely believe them, cooperate fully with no jurisdiction arguments, they have BFFs with miraculous computer hacking skills and DNA/chemical labs woth zero rules or effort to access needed info (only exactly when plot needs), no one needs to see badges, no one lawyers up or needs search warrants...just hey, come on in and search freely and find evidence of the crimes ...

Despite the inane bits and heroine seeming more clueless teen than FBI agent, I enjoyed this book right up to this ending.

love triangle plus secretly she's been an elven princess whose dad did not really die or abandon his family but instead left to protect them.

I suppose I should give credit to author's research into the paranormal that brought odd creatures and creature names/terminology into play that have not been done to death -- but that was so hit you over the head here's some overlooked folklore I researched see how clever I am insertions that did not flow with the plot (and unless willing to do equal research into tribal folklores of other continents the clues in the FBI case did not add up.

Ratings scale used in absence of a booklikes suggested rating scale:

★★★★★ = All Time Favorite
★★★★½ = Extraordinary Book. Really Loved It.
★★★★☆ = Loved It.
★★★½☆ = Really Liked.
★★★☆☆ = Liked.
★★½☆☆ = Liked parts; parts only okay. Would read more by author.
★★☆☆☆ = Meh. Okay.
★½☆☆☆ = Disliked but kept me reading in hopes would get better.
★☆☆☆☆ = Loathed It. Possibly DNF and a torturous read.
½☆☆☆☆ = So vile was a DNF or should have been. Cannot imagine anyone liking.  (Might also be just an "uploaded" word spew or collection that should not be dignified by calling itself a "published book." Or author should take remedial classes for language written in until basic concepts like using sentences sink in. Is author even old enough to sign a publishing contract or do they need a legal guardian to sign for them?)
