#readathon . A helluva good book

Terminal Alliance (Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse) - Jim C. Hines

It's distracted me from planned Readathon activities.

It has sentient alien SQUID!

Unexpectedly excellent science fiction, plausible, a sense of place and of alien-ness.  Yes, I know this is a favorite author.  But he usually writes fantasy.  With a series name like "Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse," I think I was expecting more slapstick, screwball comedy on the fluffy side; a breezy read for Readathon.

Yes, some humor.  But, damn if this isn't seriously good science fiction so far.

The cover makes it look hilarious and along the lines of the twins old tv series "Quark.".  Of course, their big diabetes bash during Derby Festival always brings that to mind this time of year.

Except for Barbie doll appearance of M.C. on the cover, not an irrelevant cover (the squid aliens at top of the hierarchy aren't pictured; that's a different alien shown).  The M.C. is an older, tough as nails chick "LIEUTENANT MARION “MOPS” Adamopoulos, commander of the Shipboard Hygiene and Sanitation team on the EMCS Pufferfish" with combat and strategy experience.  The green monocle is her AI who can be talked into manual overriding his/its programming.
